Love, Lost, La La Land

Warning: This post contains heavy spoilers from La La Land.

Netflix has just released La La Land and I was beyond excited watching it for the third time. If you’re not yet set foot on this musical masterpiece, I highly recommend that you enjoy it in a room overflowing with silence, perhaps invite a couple of friends who can appreciate the beauty of one’s movie.

Apart from the iconic songs and the touch of old-modern Hollywood visuals and ambience, La La Land is able to depict a beautiful story of two, embarking on a fascinating journey to reach their visions along with each other. Their relationship is what I want to set my eyes for in this.

Mia and Sebastian were able to encounter each other several times, starting from a blasting honk and a middle finger, to intersecting the second time on Christmas. Mia, who just left a party out of frustration, was drawn in by the beautiful melodic sound that came from a restaurant. It was Sebastian who played the piano disobediently. Afterwards, they continued to cross again at a pool party.

From there, both of them quickly sew their stories together in a romantic story. Mia and Sebastian were able to connect deeper because they share few similarities, two had each of their deep visions, with Mia becoming a successful actress and Sebastian creating a jazz club. Both started from the very bottom so they don’t necessarily have a flat road along their way.

What I love about their connection is their supportive acts towards each other: how Sebastian willingly supported Mia in any event and became the optimist whenever Mia was deep in her self-doubting mindset. This also applies to Mia who assisted Seb and his passions from the very start. Like how she was uncertain when Sebastian chose to be in modern-electronic music, where in actuality, his true love was in Jazz.

It doesn’t only stop from there, although they both were deeply in love with each other, both of them don’t demand anything from their partners. They don’t selfishly ask their significant other to be with them only, but they root for each other’s journey till the very end.

I adore how they both unconsciously made promises together to do their absolute best in accomplishing their ambitions prior to departing. And perhaps the last scene where they share a glare while silently saying “We did it”, has deeply rooted in my heart.

When I was a kid watching it for the first time, I never thought their relationship was this beautiful and heartbreaking. I love how this movie doesn’t portray a happy love story ending where they end up in each other’s arms forever and beyond. It’s a matter of sacrificing what’s truly important to you in order to reach your dreams because you can’t create your best omelette without having to break a few eggs, right?
